Global Game Jam 2019!
After the long weekend we managed to get our game uploaded just in time. It turns out if your game is in the process of uploading when the deadline passes the game still makes it to the global game jam website.
This year, my team and I designed a game called Memory. You play as an old man with dementia, and the game starts after one of your “episodes.” You do not know where you are, and you hear a woman crying downstairs that you do not recognize. You then explore your home to find clues to piece together who you are and discover why the woman downstairs is so important to you.
My team was drawn to a more heartfelt, story-focused experience. After much deliberation about what the game should be about, we landed on the idea of a man who needs to explore his home to figure out what was happening. Our original plan was that it was his birthday, and his family was downstairs. As the game evolved, it turned into a story about a man and his wife. To incorporate game-play elements, we designed three mini games that corresponded to a special memory between the man and his wife to help him remember who she was. Each of the games acted as small puzzles that required you to find clues around the house to help solve the mystery of the woman. The first memory is the dance he shared with his wife on their wedding night. The second memory is a poem he shared with his wife that is written with magnets on the fridge. Lastly you pick a rose from a vase in the hallway that reminded him of a time when he picked a violet to give to her (her name was Violet). If all the memories are completed, then he remembers who she is (although we ran out of time to implement that).
